Diana, One of the most interesting aspects (geographically) of NJ is the Pine Barrens. This vast pine forest takes up a good part of south-central NJ (mainly Ocean and Burlington Counties). Contrary to the name, the Barrens soil is very rich, and there is much more vegetation than simply the pine trees. The Barrens is protected land under the Pinelands Protection Act - at least I think that's the proper name!) and anyone who wants to build has to go through a lot of governmental regulations. There is also a state legend called "The Jersey Devil", originating in Atlantic County (near Atlantic City). James McCloy wrote a book about it several years ago, ("The Jersey Devil") which I believe is still in print. The original publisher was Afton. The legend is verrrry interesting. By the way, the NJ Devils professional hickey team is named after this legend! You may also want to check any books by John Cunningham. Also, check our college's web site - the history of this estate is very interesting. URL http://www.georgian.edu Lakewood was a winter resort for the wealthy (read: Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, etc.) at the turn of the century. Have fun with this - NJ is a really interesting place!
