As you are probably aware, Children's Book Week AND Geography Week
happen to fall on the same week this year. I found this out when one of my
fifth grade teachers told me. Anyway, this same teacher, a fourth grade
teacher, and I sat down and planned activities for the week. They gave me
great workbooks, posters, and ideas for my classes. Below is a brief
description of what is happening.

Every day a trivia question will be read over the intercom by two students.
One question will be on a primary level and one on an intermediate.
Students have until 2:00 that day to solve the question. I will give out
prizes to those who get the answer. The questions involve research and
geography skills.

Monday - Two students from each grade (2-6 only) come down and pick out a
postcard. Each postcard says "Greetings from" and then the name of a state.
The students have until Friday of that week to decorate the postcard with
plants, animals, habitat from that state. Next week, I will put the
postcards on my bulletin board around the map of the United States.

Tuesday - Fourth graders will do a trivia hunt in the library. They will be
coming in small groups from 8:30-11:30 to do this. Each group will probably
spend a half an hour searching for the answers. I have a book for the first
one to answer all of the questions correctly. The students will be using
almanacs, nonfiction, and fiction books to find their answers.

Wednesday - Fifth graders do the same thing that fourth graders did on Tuesday.

Thursday - Sixth graders do the same thing that fourth graders did on
Tuesday. Also, it's t-shirt day! Students can wear t-shirts with place
names on them. The student who has the place furthest away from
Spartanburg, SC wins a prize.

Friday - Habitat attire day. Students can wear buttons, hats, t-shirts or
whatever that show a habitat.

Every day, I have geography and/or habitat lessons planned for my fixed classes.

Just thought I would share. If anyone has more ideas for the next
time this rolls around, send them to me. I would love to see them!

By the way, I have tried pig feet but not chitlens. Pig feet are ok, but
very fatty! I prefer grits. : )
