In a book sent to me by the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago
dealing with Christmas around the world, there is the legend of the
Spider.
This legend comes from the Ukraine. The story goes that there was
an old woman who was very poor. She could not afford to decorate her
Christmas tree and was very sad. She went to bed Christmas Eve and
during the night, the spiders covered her tree with their webs.
When the first light of Christmas morning fell upon the spiders' webs,
they changed to silver and gold. Hence, in the Ukraine, it is
considered very lucky to find a spider web in your house on Christmas
morning.
My (?--should I claim them???) children tell me that then I must
be the luckiest person alive. :-/
