Thanks to all who sent methods of getting the musty smells out of books.
Here's what I learned:

Put the books in a garbage with either kitty litter or activated
charcoal and seal.

Try baby powder.

Wash the covers with Ivory soap then open the books up as much as
possible and set them in the sunlight.

Sprinkle with baking soda and leave in a dry spot for a few days.

Put in a plastic zip lock bag with Carpet Fresh.

Wonderful, practical solutions-- but for elegance, you can't beat this
one:

"I have placed leaves of the herb costmary between pages.  It is also
know as Bible weed because people used to use it to keep their Bibles
fresh.
You might try other herbs too such as lavender."
