There's the "Children's Choices" list published each October in the Reading Teacher from IRA. The 1996 list is on pages 129-143. You can see the list for 1996 in the Follett catalog, page 17, and several years of the list in the Permabound catalog under "IRA-CBC Children's Choices" where they are grouped by age levels and annotated.
