IMHO, KJV has been around an awful long time and is loved because of that,
but it is not the most authoritative version by a long shot.  If scholarly
authority is what you are looking for, you need to keep a copy of the New
Oxford Annotated Bible (New Revised Standard Version) on hand.  It is a
newer translation (translation, not paraphrase) of original texts by the
most eminent Biblical scholars of our day.  It includes introductions to
each book, historical background, and comments and cross references in
notes at the bottom of each page.  It is the standard for seminary study
and can't be beat for basic reference.
