In Corvallis, Oregon, because of sharp cutbacks inschool budgets and
creation of the block system in the high schools, here are a few ways
theywork tgether:

The public library has set up volunteer tutors during the school day to help
kids do research, etc., at the library, on school projects, during the long
blocks when they don't have to be at school. This also gives the kids an
appropriate place tobe.

The public library is, because of less new books, working hardr with
teachers to make sure books are on hand ffrom the library to be used at the
school for special topics and projects. The children's librarian is
coordinating this so people can get books they need, but share them and they
aren't all gone from the public library at once.

The Corvallis-Benton Co. Library is great with a terrific group of people.
The head Librarian's name is Deborah Jacobs, who has won several awards for
her work at this library. I recommend anyone calling (they'll kill me when
those phones lite up!) to get ideas.
