It will indeed be a complete break away from System 7, but Macintosh promises a long lag period of support for System 7 and that it will be advanced itself through a final version 7.9. The same thing is going to happen on the PC side eventually....new operating systems will finally split with the past with no backward compatibility. Microsoft debated hard about doing that with Windows 95, but decided backward compatibility was more important this time. Windows 97 will also be backward compatible (release later this year).
