According to The Raintree Illustrated Science Encyclopedia -- "Males
[crickets] are able to make a sound by rubbin their two front wings
together...hearing organs are on its front legs" Perhaps you are thinking
of grasshoppers -- "males and sometimes females "sing" by rubbing one rear
leg against a vein in the forewing."
