GEN: pronunciation

I hope someone out there can clarify something for me since I learned quite
early on that the "." is called "dot" and not "period" when giving an
internet address.  Now my question:  how do you say URL?  Do you pronounce
each letter by itself or put them together as if they were a word and say
something like "yurl"?  TIA.
