Just a word of thanks to all who sent greetings for our Family
Technology Night. It's really impressive to see how quickly people
respond.

Several asked about what we did. This is our second year and both times
we had about 500 people. Of course, the fact that we have a spaghetti
dinner also helps. We move computers to rooms at the front of the
building---6-8 per room. Two connecting rooms form a subject
area---language arts, science, social studies, and math. The library is
the place to access Internet. Student guides are in each room to
demonstrate programs if requested, help when problems arise, and just
make people feel welcome. Of course, there is a supervising teacher in
each room. Children are encouraged to take their parents to each room
and show them what programs they use in each subject area. Everything
is very informal(like a computer open house) and very student oriented.
We also run computer contests---design an ad, essay(this year's
topic---Why we need more technology in our school), and spelling
contests with computer programs. There are room winners, grade level
winners and primary and intermediate winners. They get certificates,
ribbons, and pins. These are awarded at the end of Family Technology
Night and the winning primary and intermediate essays are read. It's a
lot of work for only a small profit but lots of good p.r. Our only
concession is that we decided at the end that every year was too often.
We will probably only have one every 2-3 years.

Hope this helps. Good luck if you decide to do it. It's lots of hard
work but fun too.
