One thing that Shannon leaves out is the vital role of selection....it is
(or should be) the trained librarian who is equiped to make the informed
decisions about which materials to purchase for the collection, in whatever
format. And let's not forget cataloging the danged stuff! And of course,
Shannon is right...the format may change, but the needs are the same!

>I don't think I'm being naive when I say this isn't a new situation.
>When one walked into a library circa 1910, there were many books on
>the shelves, maps, altlases, different reference tools. All the
>information is there--why have a librarian? Why can't the
>students/patrons just "go get" the information for themselves?
>Because it would take forever, that's why. So the librarian is there
>to put the materials in a useful order, to train people to access
>them with a minimum of fuss, and to assist in making the resources
>easily available to those who need them.
>
>So now, there are a new variety of resources, but I see the role of
>librarian as just the same. Only the formats have been changed.
