Our school is currently doing research to prepare for a grant that would provide funds for innovative early elementary programs for kindergarten - third grade that would benefit at-risk students. We are already a school-wide Title I building and have Reading Recovery for first grade. We also use a language aquisition program, Foundations in Reading (Breakthrough) for kindergarten and first grade. This program combines individualized computer instruction with whole group activities. Are any of your schools currently using Success For All (SFA), the Accelerated School Project, or the School Development Program that was developed by James P. Comer? I would greatly appreciate hearing from those of you who are working in schools that have these programs or any other ones that you feel are effective programs for young at-risk students. The research I am reading now says that success for students is attained if reading at grade level is achieved by grade 3. Also, what do you feel is the role of the media specialist in achieving this success? Thank you very much for your help.
