Dear Group, I have to admit, while I read every message posted, I tend to answer the person who did the posting and not the entire group. So when I fired off my reply to Matthew - something to the tune of I don't have time for shelving - and then read everyone's responses to the group, I felt a little sheepish. Of course, if there's some reason why no one in my library has had a chance to put books away, I will grab a pile and put them away. But then I saw today's message from Denise Moll in Michigan who said: **We ache to be recognized as professionals, but then we insist on "doing it all", including shelving, rather than delegate the clerical and housekeeping chores. Volunteers and kids can do this; I can't "afford" to in any sense of the word.** Three Cheers for Denise! Sure, I can shelve books just like my aide and volunteers and kids. But who else does the lesson plans, searches the net for information for the teachers, writes curriculum, weeds, selects books for purchasing, etc. They are paying me not-quite-big bucks to do the BIG JOBS that I have been trained to do. And the list of BIG JOBS does not include shelving. So to agree with Denise - DELEGATE!!! IMHO!!! Karen DeFrank, Librarian and Story Lady Dorothy L.
