Following is a compilation of suggestions in response to my post about ten days ago seeking names of non-conformists, of people who traveled "the road less taken". Thanks to the following LM_NETters who contributed: Julie Rogers, Audrey Glick, Myra Gross, Cathie Miller, Becky Keller, Lynn McCree, Sister Sally Daly, Debbie White, Kathleen Fernandes, and Paul Kreamer. ***** Robin Graham and Tania Aebi, both of whom chucked college to sail a small boat single-handed around the world. Robin's book is called *Dove* and Tania's is *Maiden Voyage*. You might also add the late Robert Manry who described his own trans-atlantic journey as a middle-aged family man taking a 13 foot sailboat to England in *Tinkerbelle*. Dorothea Dix, Victoria Woodhull, Cesar Chavez, Margaret Sanger. Look at the names of the people listed on the latest Macintosh commercial on TV. (suggested by two people) The title of the article is LOOKING BACK AT FORWARD THINKERS Thirteen innovators who changed education: Charles William Eliot Andrew Carnegie John Dewey Maria Montessori FDR Thurgood Marshall Benjamin Mays Clark Kerr Albert Shanker Joan Ganz Cooney Allan Bloom Paulo Freire Annette Polly Williams This list is from Jules Archer's book *The Unpopular Ones*." Roger Williams, John Peter Zenger, Thomas Paine, Anne Royall, Joseph Palmer, Horace Greeley, Henry David Thoreau, Jonathan Walker, Amelia Jenks Bloomer, Eugene Debs, Woodrow Wilson, Bethenia Owens, Margaret Sanger, J. Robert Oppenheimer, J. William Fulbright. Buckminster Fuller, Frank Lloyd Wright and Churchill Just a few pioneers/nonconformists--Amelia Earhart, Thomas Edison, Mother Jones, Georgia O'Keeffe, George Eliot, Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Howard Hughes, Galileo, Jackie Robinson. Ralph Nader Katherine Hepburn Susan B. Anthony Caesar Chavez Jane Fonda Thomas Paine Henry Thoreau Sacajawea These two books were suggested as good resources: CONTEMPORARY HEROES AND HEROINES (Ray B. Brown, ed.) (Gale Pub.) AMERICAN REFORMERS (Alden Whitman, ed.) (H.W. Wilson Pub.).
