Greetings Colleagues, I responded to Matthew privately. However, the attention that this item is getting prompts me, too, to comment publicly. I don't shelve books. I do not need to shelve books in order to know the status of the shelves, if books are in order, the condition of books, etc. I am in the stacks with students and teachers throughout the day helping them to access materials. I thoroughly enjoy working directly with them and serving them in this manner when my assistance is needed. (Big6, 3.1) It is then that I see the status of the shelves, put a book in its proper place, note the condition of materials, find gaps in the collection, etc. To echo the sentiments of Jim Mahoney, if I may: I prefer teaching to shelving. I also enjoy a relationship of mutual respect with the students, faculty, parents, and administrators who use this library, and the one Library Assistant with whom I work.
