I too prefer to teach rather than shelve. I also prefer to teach rather
than participate in endless meetings, rather than take apart the printer
to undo the fifth paper jam since lunch, rather than explain to a
teacher for the twelfth time how to check her e-mail (a task easily
accomplished by a fourth grader), but these are also a part of my job.
I do not wish to get into a listing of who has more work. Each
librarian has a limited amount of time and most could claim an unlimited
number of tasks. While I would rather have a volunteer (Paid aide???)
to do the mundane tasks, I still consider it my job to see that all
tasks, regardless of how simple they might seem, get done, and if that
means that I have to shelve books, then so be it.

I am glad that you have the option to delegate those tasks which do not
require your skills and training. I am glad your one employee does
respect and like you.
