Equipment Inventory

I have inherited a high school where no piece of euipment has been inventory
properly. Some pieces have been marked but most has not and there is no
record of anything! At the school I was in before we used a system of
marking with the letters AV and a number. Does anyone have a better way to
keep track and suggestions for what to used to mark black pieces of
equipment. I will ocourse keep a data base of the equipment if I ever track
each piece down and label
