Betty Dawn and Group: I read with fascination Betty Dawn Hamilton's message about the librarian who doesn't like to read. At first I was distressed, outraged even (well, maybe a little strong), but reason prevailed. Some people love books, genuinely, but do not read well or fast (sometimes this is a learning disability!!!) and as a consequence may not express a love of reading. I am not so sure that this precludes them from librarianship and from the process of "selling" books and reading that happens in many libraries along with the multitude of other skills we promote and teach. I think that with careful planning and thought it is still possible to instill in others a love of reading even if you are not such a lover of the process yourself, BUT it is much more difficult. And you must be aware of what most of us might consider a fault - not loving to read - so as not to give out the wrong subliminal messages. Perhaps also this librarian was simply nervous and said something she did not mean. In any event this is an interesting discussion.
