Kate, With the number of students you will have, it will take a bit to learn all of their names. Here's a trick I have used to get through the first week or two: 1. Allow students to choose their own seats. 2. Give a paper to each table and have everyone at that table sign their names. 3. Collect the papers, and use them to write quick notes regarding who should not sit together next week, etc. while they are there the first week. 4. At the end of each day, you will have valuable info. for each class regarding who wants to sit where, who's friends with who, and who can't quite sit together and pay attention to you at the same time. You can make your seating assignment decisions on a more intelligent basis this way. This year, I am planning to allow students to choose their own seats, and just be very tough with discipline. It's easier to do that once you have been at the school for a while, and they all have known you since they were in Kindergarten! Good Luck!
