My latest unfortunate experience: Because so many students in a 1-2 class were checking out Goosebumps without being able to read them, I told the whole group they could not check out books if they could not pass the 5 finger rule test. One girl wanted to check out Ella Enchanted, but couldn't pass the test. Sure enough, her mom came in the next day to find out why her daughter couldn't have the book she wanted. I felt pretty bad that I had denied the girl the book she clearly wanted, and checked it out to her. It came back the day after that! But from now on I'll avoid using the 5 finger rule as a test, & just let it be a "suggestion."
