GEN:ISBN #s-Publisher's vs. trade?

Hi,

I have a question from a librarian friend that neither of us are sure
about and could use the expertise of this listserv.

When both a publisher's ISBN number and a Trade ISBN number is listed in a
book, which do you use on the original cataloging record? What is the
difference between the two?
