Subject: A/V discarding

I just started in an elementary library this year and have a question about
discarding filmstrips and kits. The library I am in has an A/V room attached
that seems to have been used as a storage (throw anything you don't know what
to do with in here and no one will notice) room. It's been slow going, but I
have managed to throw out a lot of junk. There are a few hundred old
filmstrips and kits that aren't used and I need to discard them to get ready
for automation (yippee!).

ANYWAY, since it's my first year in this particular library I'm not sure what
is still used by teachers. I have set aside the things I would like to
discard, and want to give teachers a chance to save anything they still use.
I would like to have a day after school where teachers can come and look over
potential discards. If at least two people say they use something, it would
stay in the collection. Has anyone done something similar to this? Could you
give me some advice?

--Some teachers have expressed an interested in keeping the discards in their
classrooms. I have a problem with this since I am discarding items with "old"
information. But if they are willing to store it, should I let them take it?
--I don't want teachers to find things they didn't know we had and ask me to
keep it even though they haven't used or might not ever use it.
--The past librarian bought videos to replace filmstrips, but never discarded
the filmstrips. This is an older faculty, very set in it's ways, and some
still use the filmstrips instead of the newer videos. Should I toss those
filmstrips anyway since there is newer material that covers that subject?

Sorry this was so long. Thanks for any advice or suggestions that you can
share. Have a happy Valentine's Day!
