I have a stumper for you all. An English teacher is reading a short story with his class by Stephen Vincent Benet. I can't remember the title, but it is Something of Babylon. It takes place in the far future. The people in the future are walking around a destroyed city and toward the end we discover that the place they are at is actually NYC. They come across an arched sign (meaning it was not a street sign or traffic sign) and it is broken. The only piece that is visible is "ubtreas". There are supposed to be letters before and after. The teacher can't figure it out. They had come across a sign previously that said somthing like "ingto" which was easy-- it is supposed to be Washington Park or something with Washington in it. The English teacher can't figure this one out. The English supervisor couldn't. The remainder of the English department hasn't got a clue. The other librarian and myself couldn't figure it out, and it wasn't in any of our resources. The Talented and Gifted Teacher happened to be there and she didn't know either. So, now I ask all of you. What could this sign be??? Is it anything, or is Benet laughing in his grave, knowing people are forever trying to figure this thing out??
