To LM_NET readers. I am sending my response to this issue to the entire
list, rather than just to the initiator, because it is an issue that is
germane to all of us:

We have an AUP at Peotone (IL) High School also. Here's how we enforce it:

Students are informed that the Board of Education provide Internet access
to students for educational purposes. By definition, then, appropriate use
of this resource must relate to a project or assignment. If a student is
found to be in violation of this "appropriate use", he or she is sent to
the Dean. The student then enters into the disciplinary process the same as
if sent from any classroom by any teacher for refusing to do as instructed.
Losing Internet priviledges for a period of time is usually not one of the
disciplinary options.

The reason for this is as follows: We believe that we do not have the right
to deprive a student access to any resource that is a part of a project or
assignment assigned by a teacher. If a student is writing in a textbook, we
do not take it away from him or her for the remainder of the year. If a
student marks on a desk, we do not make him or her sit on the floor for the
rest of the year. So, too, if a student misuses the Internet, we do not
take the resource away. Students serve detentions, Saturday schools,
suspensions and the like for misbehavior.

Hope this helps,
    Fred
