To LM_NET readers. I am sending my response to this issue to the entire list, rather than just to the initiator, because it is an issue that is germane to all of us: Deborah Delsemme wrote: |Well, well, well, what to do? Our school has AUP policies signed by |parents and students. The violaters of the AUP have been taken on a case |by case basis regarding disciplinary action. For the most part, as a |consequence, violators have lost their Internet privileges for that school |year. This has been going worked well until recently. Are your violators |given a shorter suspension from privileges? |[ stuff deleted ] Also, many |teachers are requiring the use of the Internet in order to accomplish the |goals of the class. [ more deleted ] |My building principal as well as myself and the other LMS feel we cannot |deny an education to a student. We certainly can't prohibit a student from |resources needed to accomplish the required assignments. We have an AUP at Peotone (IL) High School also. Here's how we enforce it: Students are informed that the Board of Education provide Internet access to students for educational purposes. By definition, then, appropriate use of this resource must relate to a project or assignment. If a student is found to be in violation of this "appropriate use", he or she is sent to the Dean. The student then enters into the disciplinary process the same as if sent from any classroom by any teacher for refusing to do as instructed. Losing Internet priviledges for a period of time is usually not one of the disciplinary options. The reason for this is as follows: We believe that we do not have the right to deprive a student access to any resource that is a part of a project or assignment assigned by a teacher. If a student is writing in a textbook, we do not take it away from him or her for the remainder of the year. If a student marks on a desk, we do not make him or her sit on the floor for the rest of the year. So, too, if a student misuses the Internet, we do not take the resource away. Students serve detentions, Saturday schools, suspensions and the like for misbehavior. Hope this helps, Fred ==================================================================== J.
