A suggestion was printed in Athena's newsletter in May of 96. Many
of our media specialists use this method and it seems to work well.
Here goes:

Each periodical is assigned a unique number and a list of these
numbers is kept at the check out station. When someone wants to
check out a magazine, a barcode is built on the spot by combining
this unique number with the month and year that the magazine was
issued. For example, the on-the-spot barcode for the November 94
issue of magazine 42 (Scientific American) would be 421194. The
first two digits are the magazine number. The third and fourth
digits refer to the month of publication and the last two digits
refer to the year of publication. When this type of number is
entered during check out, Athena treats it as an uncataloged item.
The advantage of this system is that library staff can quickly tell
which magazine is checked out just by looking at the barcode number.

This tip was provided by Arne Maage, Librarian at Stevens Point Area
Senior High School. Sorry I can't provide any more information on
Arne.
