Greetings! The end of year (non-automated) inventory I inherited with my job is - to me - absolutely bizarre. I believe this stystem started sooooooo Many years ago that it's just the way it's done. I'm not being forced at gunpoint to do this but I'd like to recommend a change. We're tal;king about libraries with about 6,000 books, most purchased 25 years ago, and other media that have not ONLY been checked against the shelf list (which is what I though inventory was) but my predecessor handed in 'counts'. A completely divided up list of library contents with numbers in columns showing what books and media fromf what funding sources (4 different ones) are actunally physically on the shelves. She spent hours (weeks, months, days?) tallying these so that they came out even - showing no unaccounted items missing etc.! (kind of retentive -isn;t it?). This is bizarre! I would like - with my other librarians to suggest that: 1.foremost we check our shelf list against the shelves. 2.we hand in a list of acquisitions and weeds and student losses. And that's IT. Does this make sense ?Many thanks....
