I know this may be labouring a point somewhat, but I sometimes think it works to my advantage that some kids don't see the library as a classroom. I've always found that the library has its regulars - those who are seeking refuge for one reason or another, and those who are keen readers. I find the former category like the less formal atmosphere of the library - they may not flourish in the classroom for various reasons. I once had a teacher introduce me to a group of parents by saying that the pupils liked me because I wasn't a teacher (even though I make it clear that school rules apply just as much here as they do in the classroom!). Sometimes I feel like an agony aunt - I get to hear a lot about their lives, which I'm not always sure that some teachers do - I think the less formal atmosphere loosens their lips, and out comes all the gossip! My favourite was one of my regulars - he's got a reputation for being "difficult", but I get on well with him. He leaned over the counter one morning, very serious, and asked me "Miss, how can I get rid o' ma spots?". I told him that if I knew, I'd be a millionaire by now! The point I'm trying to make is that pupils and staff will always perceive the library as different from the classroom - this can be a positive or a negative thing, depending on what kind of day you're having!
