Niagara Falls

Someone planning a vacation to Niagara Falls has asked me if I could find
the following information.  How easy is it to travel between the U.S. and
Canada?  Do you need to have proof of citizenship such as a birth
certificate?  Should you stay on the U.S. or the Canadian side?  Does
anyone have any good recommendations for accommodations?
