We visit Washington often.  You need to get tickets to the Washington
Monument and several other things in advance.  Contact the National Park
service to find out the details. The zoo is a must, even in hot smelly
weather.  The Museum of Natural History has a great children's room, my
kids loved it at that age.  Perhaps the Air and Space museum and the mint,
my kids had more fun spending money by buying money at the store after the
tour but we all had a good time.  Hope this helps.
