The use of "man" may not offend the etymologist or the linguist, but most of our students are neither and subliminal effects occur with the use of gender language. I taught a college level course in comparative religion several years ago and one of my students did a research paper on the psychological effects of male-gender language on women. It was an eye opener. Try reversing the language and replace "man" with "woman" and use it exclusively for a period of time and discover if it means anything to you. I think we need to be more aware of these subliminal effects on our young students.
