Finally, here is the HIT on sources for help with understanding and/or constructing MARC records. A huge thanks to all of you who responded with so many excellent suggestions. I have already visited the Web sites, requested the freebies, and ordered some other things. I've tried to make sure that everything here is correct and up-to-date, but if you find a problem, let me know. Follett - most recommended source by LM_NETTERS phone 800-323-3397 or 888-511-5114, ext. 324 to request Follett's free booklet called Understanding MARC Format (this is an automated service - we'll see if it works) <http://www.fsc.follett.com/products/marcformat.html> - for ordering info on a very highly recommended "flip chart" called the "MARC Bibliographic Format Guide" for $59.95 <http://www.fsc.follett.com/data/marctags/> to view the Tag of the Month site for info on individual tags Mitinet - a software application that apparently uses a fill-in-the-blank technique to do MARC records even for those who don't speak speak the "language" and then dump them into your automation program; Demo disk available phone: 800-824-6272 or <http://www.mitinet.com> Marcive SELECT - will provide MARC records; you can set up a free 30-day trialaccount; may be for Windows platform only - 800-531-7678 <http://www.marcive.com> - click on "MarciveWeb SELECT" - I e-mailed them from the web site and had a response the next morning Library of Congress (highly recommended by many LM_NETTERS) <http://www.loc.gov/marc/marc.html> - tons of MARC information which can be printed out and kept for reference <http://lcweb.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/ecbdhome.html> - for USMARC Concise Format for Bibliographic Data <http://lcweb.loc.gov/cds/marcdoc.html#umb> - information on LC's booklet called Understanding MARC Bibliographic - you can also request one free copy at phone 800-255-3666 Indiana Univ <http://www.indiana.edu/~librcsd/resources/library/cataloging/ catsheet.html> This URL was recommended for a MARC "cheat sheet", but I could not bring it up Northwest Ohio Educational Technology - curriculum enhanced MARC records <http://www-wbgu.bgsu.edu/nwoetf/marc/MARC1.html> BOOKS: Piepenburg, Scott. _EASY MARC_ and _MORE EASY MARC_. F & W Associates, Castle Rock, CO (available, I think, from Libraries Unlimited) Intner, Sheila S. _Standard Cataloging for School and Public Libraries_. 2nd ed. available from Libraries Unlimited (800-237-6124 ) $32.50 Millsap, Larry. _Descriptive Cataloging for the AACR-2R and the Integrated MARC Format_. published by Neal-Schuman Byrne, Deborah J. _MARC Manual: Understanding and Using MARC Records_. Libraries Unlimited (800-237-6124) Several people also suggested that we watch for cataloging and/or MARC record workshops in our area and contact our automationsoftware vendors to see what they have to offer.
