ELEM: STUMPER

A colleague wants to find a book she remembers using in a class several
years ago.  I've checked with other librarians in the district--no
luck--and James Stevenson is not the author.  She recalls the book is
about a man who is a hermit.  One day he receives a love note--she thinks
the love note was related to Valentine's Day.  He becomes social and
happy.  Then he receives a note saying that the love note was not for him.
His life takes a nose dive.  It has a positive ending, although I can't
remember the ending!  Any way, although the plot sounds depressing, the
book was beautiful.

Please e-mail me directly if you know the title.  The request came from a
new teacher in our school and she is a great teacher and library
supporter.
