First and formost, thanks to all who replied to my question. I was asking
what people do when they have a book in hand with a different ISBN but
find the title on Alliance. The answer I got most often was that people
edit the record to match the book in hand, keeping the subject headings
and tracings so that the book can still be searched. Peter Genco
recommended checking the 006 field for dates, 260 for publisher, 300 field
for pages, etc. J. Lees recommended adding an 020 tag for the ISBN of the
paperback and using the record from Alliance. The feeling among most of
the librarians is we need to avoid the brief records and make available
the fields students are most likely to search. Thanks also to Follett Tech
Support who also replied - their suggestion for the donated paperbacks is
to add the ISBN of the paperback to the MARC record on Alliance, being
sure to put (pbk.) after the ISBN.
Thanks to this listserv, none of us ever feel we're "all alone out there".
