Thanks for all the advice on the magazines. My query
was:

Please let me know what you think of these magazines.
Of course, I especially want to know if you think they
are suitable for middle school students.

TEEN PEOPLE
ENTERTAINMENT
DISNEY ADVENTURE
EASTBAY
TEEN BEAT
ALL ABOUT YOU

and the responses were:

***************************************
> TEEN PEOPLE

I liked the concept until the feature article in the first
issue I looked over was "How My Prom Date Turned Into
a Date Rape." Seems geared a bit too much toward HS f
or my taste.

> DISNEY ADVENTURE

My fifth-grade daughter gets this and loves it. As she's
a high level reader, I suspect this would be ok at 6th and
maybe 7th.

***************************************
Unless the later issues of Teen people are better the first
one was mostly advertising. Not worth spending money on.

***************************************

My ten-year-old loves Disney Adventures and so do his
friends. Would be great for grade 6 and probably a little
young for grade 8. I enjoy browsing it to keep up-to-date
on Disney movies and tv.
***************************************
The only one I know about is Disney Adventure. My 7th grade
girl loves it. It isn't very durable. We have it in our K-5
library and the kids read it so much it's all torn up.

***************************************
I looked at a couple of new magazines at the news stand
a few months ago with an eye on subscribing for our middle
school. I *think* that ALL ABOUT YOU was the one that had
quite a few personality-questionaires/tests in it which I
feared would make the magazine undesirable after the first
reader. I might be wrong about which magazine it is though.
I suggest you try to find copies of the titles yourself at a
news stand, bookstore, grocery or wherever and buy a
sample copy of the ones you are interested in.
***************************************

> TEEN PEOPLE--I don't know this one.
> ENTERTAINMENT--If this is the one I'm thinking of, I wouldn't
get it for middle school; I can't see great interest in it.
> DISNEY ADVENTURE--I use this for my elementary kids; it's
very popular there. My older kids only occasionally ask for
it.
Fine magazine, even if it *does* promote Disney.
> EASTBAY--I don't know this one.
> TEEN BEAT--I use this for 5th-8th-grade side of my K-8
library. It's very popular, but quality is minimal. Students
need to ask for it, and I keep it behind the desk and use a
security strip in it because of theft.
> ALL ABOUT YOU--I don't know this one.

***************************************
We subscribe to Teen People and Disney Adventures at
our middle school.

***************************************
I work in a 7-12 high school and plan to get Teen People.
I brought in a sample and the kids liked it. Eastbay, if
it's the same one I get is only a sports catalog.

***************************************

The only one I take is Teen People I think it is great and
so do the kids.
***************************************
Disney Adventure is fine for middle school kids. We
subscribe to it for our upper level kids at our school. It has
a comic strip, interviews, etc. all based on Disney shows
or movies or products.

Eastbay is a sports equipment catalog and is free.
***************************************
The only title I'm familiar with is Disney Adventure and it
circulates with the kids. I feel that it's a bit "commercial"
with emphasis on each new year's Disney Movie, etc. It was
on the list when I came so I've continued to subscribe to it.
Not a valid reason educationally, but functionally.
