Friends and colleagues, I had a frustrating experience yesterday that I feel compelled to share with others who might relate! Even though I am relatively comfortable with my current job I still keep my ears open for school openings in my area. I have known for quite a while that my high school librarian and mentor(She was that before we even used that term!) was retiring this year. I stopped by to see her and saw that the job was posted as a: "High School--Middle School Media Specialist/K-12 Technology Director" and that the requirements include "knowledge of Novell Networking Administration". I spoke briefly with the HS Principal and asked "Then you are really looking for someone with a strong technology background?" and he said yes. I said something like "It's too bad to stress the technology so much because kids really need a lot of help in using the new technology and there are other techies more suited to running and fixing the equipment." His response was what really got to me as he said in so many words that "Once the person has the teachers all trained in the use of the technolgy that they (the teachers) will be the ones to get that information to the students"!! Does anyone else find a problem with this attitude? I know we have discussed this thread before but I guess this really hit home this time because I was strongly considering this job but I'm not sure I want to be an equipment expert. I am considered the "expert" on internet searching in my public library job and see so much need for guidance in the use of the technology and when that paper source still has the best information. Are teachers ready to take on this responsibility? Thank you for letting me vent. At least in corrections I don't have to worry about automation changing my job too much! I still have an Apple IIe and am trying to get the Card Catalog program figured out! By the way, I could use any extra book pockets and book cards(the old fashioned ones you sign!) anyone has to send my way. Thanks.
