Monika raises an interesting question about whether or not to weed the old picture book classics such as _Angus and the Ducks_, _Millions of Cats_, and the like. I have found that although these books are not as visually glamorous as the new generation of picture books, they are still marvelously readable. The drama and tension of _Angus and the Ducks_, the delicious rhythm of _Millions of Cats_, the entrancing urban pageantry of _Make Way for Ducklings_--punctuated with those scrumptious rap-like utterances "Mac, Ouack, Quack...."-- have the 70's, 80's, or 90's produced anything better? I would urge anyone who is thinking of weeding the old picture book classics to consider weaving them into their read-aloud programs -- hold onto them for dear life! They are the beginning of literacy, poetry, and delight for our young students.
