TARGET GEN: Books per shelf

We are beginning discussions regarding furniture for the libraries in our
new school which is supposed to be completed for occupancy in 2000.  Can
someone please help me with the formulas for the average number of books
which can be placed on a standard length shelf at both the secondary and
elementary levels as well as in the reference area?

P.S.  We are enjoying a "warm spell" in Moscow this Sunday afternoon as the
