I have just finished reading Tears of a Tiger by Draper and it may be just what you're looking for. A star basketball player is out to party with friends after a game, and the beer flows and the resulting automobile crash kills his best friend. The author uses school assignments (journal entries, poems, etc) to give us other characters' points of view on the problem, which makes it very interesting to read, and I think it would really appeal to the kids. In the end the main character can no longer live with his guilt. The final entries are letters from his friends to him, showing the range of emotions felt by those touched by suicide. Very powerful!
