As part of a school-wideeffort to use portfolios as one means of assessment, I am being asked to help every first grade student (some 150 of them) to develop a portfolio based on the library program (with art, music & phys ed doing the same). One suggestion given to me was to compile a list of all the books each student took out - you know, computers can do anything! (this from my new team leader who is a young - and clueless, as far as libraries go - phys ed teacher ) My first step is to clue him in to what my program encompasses. But, I am so far somewhat at a loss to come up with what meaningful kinds of things such young students could put in a portfolio. My contact with them is a 30 minute storyhour every other week. I do help some of the readers with a simple research project in the spring, but that won't create a portfolio for the majority. Is anybody else doing this? Any ideas?
