With the recent discussion about filters, I have done some investigation on the product our district uses. It is called ACTIVE GUARDIAN and it is wonderful! With it you have the capability of allowing or denying sites as YOU decide. Each campus can have their own set of approved/denied sites. You can approve a site temporarily or for a short amount of time OR you can add sites to the denied list as you want. I did this immediately after receiving Gail Szeliga's message about prank software today, and advised the other librarians and tech folks in the district to do the same. This was developed by InCommand, a local ISP here in Yakima, WA. The best thing about it now is that it has been released on Open Source as a free download! It is a Linux based caching proxy filter. From what I understand the software is free, but you may need to pay for technical support. I have no idea about the installation either. However, if you have a good tech it probably won't be much trouble. For more info and/or to download go to http://www.activeguardian.com/ Good luck with it! I hope it meets your needs in the world of filtering. -- Barb Engvall Library Media Specialist John Campbell Elementary School Selah, WA 98941 engvallb@wolfenet.com Check out the Washington Library Media Association web site: http://www.wlma.org Or the Selah School District web site: http://www.selah.wednet.edu =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
