Please post: <SO: how do you encourage students to take books out while getting them to bring them back for others to borrow?> <snip> Mary Ann Shaffer My thoughts exactly!! I am new at my school this year, and school startsThursday, August 12th. Yikes! I am in a quandary about overdues and how to balance the need to get the books back with the need to encourage the basic skill of READING. I understand that responsibility is also a skill we are teaching, but when children are turned off to checking out books and reading because they do not get the support they need at home to return materials (i.e. no special place at home for the books, no parental concern over the care of library materials), I do not want to exacerbate the problem by pointing out their late book returns. I plan to discuss this with my principal and work on solutions. If he isn't worried about getting materials back, I will ask him to foot the bill for replacements out of the building budget. If he is concerned, I will make sure that the solution we come up with has his support from the start. Does this sound logical?
