Marie's query was an interesting one when she asked how to encourage the goal of making the library "the hub of the school." I think this concept is changing especially in high schools as we network our schools and make computer access for everything from the computer catalog to the databases available from every room in the building (as well as from home.) Perhaps the new concept that has been tossed around is "the library as an idea, rather than a place" is the one we need to address as librarians. I knew my library would be decentralized as I made access to all library resources, except the actual print material, available outside the library walls. I knew it would diminish my role as instructor and supervisor and cause frustration as students and classes choose the lab or classroom to research rather than come to the library. But this is the direction that technology is taking us and I don't think we have a choice by trying to hold on to the old paradigm. If we cling to trying to protect our library resources to retain power for the library, we will be left behind. Whether the library remains "the hub of the school" will depend on the design of the library itself-if the library provides access to computers for whole classes, talking/teaching areas as well as quiet study places, rooms for students to work on multi-media projects and the personnel to oversee this activity will determine if the library is the hub of research and activity. Schools that got stuck with traditional libraries, semi-quiet rooms with some computers scattered around will be left out of the loop as students and teachers go elsewhere to do their projects. sarah &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Sarah Peckham, Librarian Marian High School 7400 Military Avenue Omaha, NE 68134 1-402-571-0619 speckham@marian.creighton.edu &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& ----- Original Message ----- From: Rodgers, Marie <Jazzcat365@AOL.COM> To: <LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> Sent: Wednesday, December 01, 1999 10:39 PM Subject: The hub of the school > Hello everyone. > I've often heard that sentence, "The library should be the hub of the > school."
