This topic is very upsetting to many of us that have earned required B.A. and Master's degrees, have many years of teaching experience, have paid "high" professional dues for years, conducted numerous teacher staff development workshops, etc. I strongly feel media assistants are simply taking the opportunity that our professional organizations are giving them. The assistants are not at fault. The blame for this situation, I feel falls to our professional orgazniations and institutions such as American Library Association, American Association of School Librarians, Association for Educational Communications and Technology, National Teachers Association, colleges and universities education programs, Southern Association, etc. Renee Olson, Editor-in-Chief, School Library Journal wrote an editorial in November (1999) issue of SLJ addressing this very issue. Renee's public support for the school certified library media specialist should be echoed by all our professional organizations and institutions. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-= All postings to LM_NET are protected under copyright law.
