Dear LM_NETTERS,

Goosie's Story is a book I would recommend. I have read it to Grade Four
children and used it as a vehicle for consciousness raising on animal
rights in general, including the caring of pets in cages. A short play has
been written based on the book and is about to be performed at a
professional theatre in Cape Town, the script for this is also available. I
have just had the privilege of meeting the author of the book, Louise Van
Der Merwe and thought you might be interested in what she has produced;
details below.

Best wishes

Goosie’s Story
By Louise van der Merwe
Published by Gecko Books

Goosie’s Story has been selected as a Grade Four reader for South African
school children (i.e. children aged about 10) for 1999. This short story,
about a battery hen which finds freedom, highlights the intrinsic wonder
and
beauty of an animal which has become lost to urban children and which,
hidden from public view, is caught up in the human food chain on factory
farms across the country.

Two Durban school teachers, Rose Visser and Claudette Stanley who have
already introduced “Goosie” to their classes, have reported that the
children become very involved in Goosie’s new-found freedom and “are quite
passionately eager to crusade on behalf of the battery hen”.
Goosie’s Story is accompanied by a 28-page Workbook, compiled by
professional educational workbook publishers.
Goosie’s Story and the Workbook belong to the new genus of educational aids
which promote compassion and respect for all life.

The price per set (Goosie’s Story and the Workbook) for airmail delivery
will be US$17.50 (10.50 British Pounds) including post and packaging. By
surface mail (5 weeks to get to the USA) the price will be US$11.50 (6.90
British Pounds) including post and packaging.

The Baxter is converting the play into a 50 minute musical and that script
is in the pipeline. But the play on which they are building their musical
is
a 20 minute animal rights play, broadly based on Goosie, and suitable for
performance by 10 to 14 year-olds. Yes we can say it is available from
Animal Voice at R15,00. Animal Voice's address is PO Box 843, Kuils River
7579, South Africa. E-mail: avoice@global.co.za
