If you're like me, you would really appreciate it you were able to use the
keyboard to switch between open programs on a Mac in a manner similar to
the Windows 95 "Alt + Tab" keystroke. You would also appreciate it if the
Mac had a visible navigational bar at the bottom of the screen like the
Windows 95 Task Bar for switching between open programs. Furthermore, you
would appreciate it if you did not have to buy 3rd-party applications in
order to make these things happen on your Mac.

Well, in Mac OS 8.5 you can make it happen:

* How to use the keyboard for switching between open programs:

  "command + tab"

* How to create your own little pseudo-Task Bar:

1) While in the Finder of Mac OS 8.5, do this:

   Special ==> Mac OS Help

2) When the Help Center window appears, type in the following and click
the "Search" button (or press "return"):

   application switcher

3) Click on the "Switching between open programs" hypertext link.

4) The next page shows you how to "tear off" a copy of the upper
right-hand corner Applications Menu and manipulate it as you please.
If you want the pseudo-Task Bar, scroll down the help page, direct
your attention to the section called "Advanced Application Switcher
Features," and then click on this hypertext link:

"Open the Application Switcher in a horizontal row in the lower-left
corner of the screen and make the window always remain on the screen."

I found out about this nifty feature on pages 88-89 of "Mac Secrets," 5th
Edition.

Gabe :-)
