The Harry Potter books remind me of Dianna Wynne Jones' Christopher Chant
books. Mary Ann Bell mentioned that she considered Harry Potter very
clever and cute but wondered what the hoopla was about. The Harry Potter
books are well-written, appealing to a wide range of readers, and not
likely to become dated. Rowling's mixed humor, adventure, fantasy, and a
touch of mystery into stories with positive views of friendship between
three children from very different backgrounds. They may not be the best
children's fantasies ever written (I have a few other candidates), but
they'll be enjoyed by children who usually don't like fantasy as well as
children who do. Part of the hoopla may even be adults who're glad to
find a children's fantasy they actually enjoy!
