How about My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. I always thought that if I had a daughter I would read her Hitty. I can't imagine any modern kid really it alone, but it's a great book to give you a unique perspective on the past. Others that come to mind Kind of the Wind and others by Marguerite Henry Out of the Dust Hesse I cannot remember the name but there is a series of nature books called One Day at... I remember reading One Day at Teton Marsh in my Children's Lit course and thinking it was very lyrical and beautiful. I think every parent should read the Wind and the Willows with their kids. How wonderful that your friend is doing this. I had boys not girls and didn't have the stricture about violence but we used to alternate the classics with the more modern ones. We read Robin Hood, Ivanhoe, Treasure Island and even (although it took a long time) A History of Mankind. Our all-time favorite was Alexander's Pyrdain Chronicles.
