There is a terrific book called _Kids Have All The Write Stuff_ by Sharon =
Edwards,(Penguin Books) that has wonderful ideas and suggestions for =
motivating children and creative writing. Although the book is written =
for elementary teachers and parents, the projects are easily adapted to =
the upper grades.

The key to their program is to have _Writing Boxes_ available for kids to =
write as the inspiration hits them and also have a structured plan. My =
program was 6 weeks long and during that time we wrote cartoons, newspapers=
, poetry, secret codes and hieroglyphics, made maps and put together an =
imaginary restaurant with recipes for the chef , menus
( now that I think about it, we could have written reviews). I book-talked=
related titles , then modeled the project, then the kids wrote for about =
40 minutes then we shared. The children were then free to continue the =
project that they had been working on or start something new.

I hope this helps. Lisa
