Hi everyone. I've just returned from last week's National Educational
Computing Conference (NECC), which was held this year in Atlantic City.
While I was there I took part in a session hosted by Dr. Larry Anderson of
Mississippi State, which also included Al Rogers of Global Schoolhouse, Tom
March, developer of WebQuests, and Shelley Pasnik of the Center for
Children and Technology. The session was supposed to be a broad Q&A
discussion on education issues, but the focus quickly turned to the debate
over government mandated filtering and students' publishing rights on the
Web. I've made a transcript of the session that can be found online at

http://edweb.gsn.org/necc99/experts.html

I'd invite all of you to read it if you get a chance. It's a little long
(8000 words) but it's a revealing look at educators' attitudes towards
filtering and (in some cases) what happens when educators don't understand
or recognize students' web publishing rights.

Hope you enjoy it...

Subject: GEN:challenge info

I am an MLS student at SCSU in New Haven CT. In my YA Lit course I need info
on a specific case or cases where Robert Cormier's The Chocolate War was
challenged. I know that it is on the most challenged lists and have checked
web sites but cannot find what I'm looking for. Where and when was the
challege, what exactly was the challenge in reference to and what was the
outcome. Any help would be appreciated. I have been using LM_Net info. for
classes and you all are a big help. Judith Finucane ajf59@hotmail.com
